Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator / Locator

How You Can Make an Impact
As a Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator / Locator at JTS, you will bring a high level of expertise in directional drilling operations, locating, and underground utility installation. This position requires advanced skills in HDD operations and the ability to lead field crews while maintaining production, safety standards, and quality workmanship.
As an operator/locator, you will help guide crews in the safe and efficient operation of directional drill rigs and locating systems, ensuring bores are completed accurately and in compliance with project requirements.
Professional Expectations
- Operation of directional bore equipment for the installation of underground conduit for various utilities including Gas, Electric and Fiber Optic.
- Perform and maintain jobsite setup and cleanup, including traffic and pedestrian control
- Read utility locates and coordinate daylighting of existing facilities
- Inspect work in progress to ensure compliance with plans and specifications
- Ensure the safety of the public and protection of underground utilities
- Follow all prescribed safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment
- Verify all applicable permits and utility locates are complete and in job folders
- Communicate daily with supervisors and submit required documentation (bore logs, vehicle and equipment reports, etc.)
- Operate vehicles and equipment as directed and properly certified
- Perform routine equipment maintenance, including greasing, oiling, and minor repairs
- Lead field teams effectively and efficiently as directed by supervision
What we are looking for in a leader:
- Ability to work extended hours, including 10+ hours and occasional 6-day workweeks and ability to work nights if required.
- Strong knowledge of utility industry safety practices and requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Practical experience in underground construction
- Working knowledge of city, county, and state clearance codes
- Read and interpret drawings, and construction diagrams
- Ability to handle stressful situations and make sound decisions in the field
- Follow company policies, procedures, and software systems
- Comfortable using computers, smartphones, and tablets
- Ability to travel to job sites throughout California
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Prior Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Required: verifiable HDD experience in an urban environment
- Preferred: 3+ years of verifiable HDD experience in an urban environment
- Valid Class A Driver’s License with no restrictions
